Key Highlights

- Maserati MC20 will be powered by an all-new V6 engine
- MC20 will also mark Maserati’s return to racing
Maserati is preparing to finally launch the all-new MC20 this week on 9 September, 2020. MC20, an all-new super sports car, was originally due to make its first official appearance in May this year but the coronavirus outbreak delayed those plans. The MC20, short for Maserati Corse 2020, will also mark the Italian brand’s return to the world of racing. According to the company, MC20 is the natural evolution of MC12 that marked Maserati’s return to racing in 2004 after a hiatus of 37 years. However, unlike MC12, the MC20 will not be associated with any Ferrari vehicle. In the build-up to its global debut, the Italian carmaker has teased the MC20 many times but the vehicle has always been heavily camouflaged. So, while MC20’s design is still a mystery, the company has already shared details about the super sports car’s engine.
According to Maserati, the upcoming MC20 will be propelled by an all-new engine, christened Nettuno (Neptune), the mythological creature whose trident has inspired Maserati’s brand logo. Nettuno is a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged, V6 engine that puts out 621 bhp at 7,500 rpm and 730 Nm of peak torque at 3,000 – 5,000 rpm.
As per the carmaker, its latest V6 powerplant features several technologies borrowed from Formula 1 and other racing of formats. The unit gets a pre-chamber combustion system featuring twin-spark plugs, making MC20 the first road-legal car in the world to feature this technology.
Maserati MC20 will sport a low-slung stance of a sports car and will get the signature Maserati radiator grille, large air intakes, and prominent rear haunches. The sports car will also get provisions like 10.1-inch touchscreen with Maserati Connect programme, Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) system for enhanced driving dynamics, Corsa mode for sportier driving style, and launch control. Maserati noted that it will also manufacture MC20’s racing variant and the Nettuno engine will be made available on future new models.
