You can go to the movies again – sort of.
The Screening Room Cinema Café, a boutique movie house at the Boulevard Mall, is reopening July 17 with a trivia and movie special featuring “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” The classic comedy will be repeated in July, along with 35th anniversary showings of “Back to the Future.”
“We’re really excited to get back open, but we want to do smartly and safely so people can come in and enjoy movies in a safe and comfortable setting,” said owner Bob Golibersuch.
To that point, the Screening Room will reopen at a reduced capacity of about 30 people. New safety precautions include plexiglass guards at the ticket counter and concessions; new filters and a HEPA air purifier; and touchless hand sanitizer stations. Masks need to be worn upon entry and when moving about (concessions, restrooms), but can be removed once seated.
Two people will be allowed in the restroom at a time and about four people at the concession stand, where you’ll now be given individual packets of condiments such as salt, sugar and butter oil for popcorn.
Traditional movie theaters have been closed since March and were not allowed to reopen as originally planned in phase four on June 30. The Screening Room, however, can reopen because it is licensed as a café and event space, not a theater. It joins the Transit Drive-In, which reopened in May, and drive-in series at Artpark and the Outer Harbor as spots where you can see movies on the big screen.
