Bournemouth were denied a second win in two games as Middlesbrough substitute Marcus Browne’s header earned the hosts a point 10 minutes from time.
Without manager Neil Warnock in attendance after he tested positive for coronavirus earlier in the week, Boro fell behind when Dominic Solanke turned home Arnaut Danjuma’s first-half corner.
Former Liverpool striker Solanke almost made it 2-0 but was denied when one-on-one with goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.
And the hosts levelled shortly afterwards as Browne smartly guided home Paddy McNair’s superb cross, much to the delight of the 1,000 socially-distanced fans who were allowed into the Riverside.
The limited crowd was permitted as one of seven government pilot events across the English Football League on Saturday, as football targets a return for more supporters from October.
They witnessed a relatively even game, although the hosts had arguably the better of the few chances.
Boro midfielder George Saville had the ball in the net, pouncing on a rebound from Britt Assombalonga’s free-kick, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
Bournemouth, who were 3-2 winners at home to Blackburn Rovers on the opening weekend, remain unbeaten in all competitions since their relegation from the Premier League last term.
Boro’s first point of the season came after they lost 1-0 at another relegated side – Watford – in the Championship’s opening fixture, before suffering a 2-0 defeat against Barnsley in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
