•The Columbus School for Girls golf team won its second consecutive Division II sectional title Sept. 27 at Blacklick Woods by having three of the top four scorers.

The Unicorns totaled 333 to defeat runner-up Columbus Academy by 23 strokes. Utica (405) was the third and final team qualifier to district Oct. 4 at Darby Creek.

At district, the championship team and the top individual not on that team advance to state Oct. 15 and 16 at Ohio State’s Gray Course.

“All season we have talked about making gradual improvements,” CSG coach Chris Ditello said. “We continued to work on ways that we could save shots on every round and we are playing our best golf of the season.”

CSG’s Kristina Ma was medalist with a 71 and teammate Emma Kim was runner-up with an 80. Academy’s Grace Luo was third (82) and the Unicorns’ Madi Kim was fourth (87).

The Unicorns qualified for state the past two seasons.

•After winning just three games last season, the Ready girls soccer team already has surpassed that victory total. 

The Silver Knights, who have a six-member senior class led by Abigail Grundei and Allison Bair, are 4-3-1 as they prepare to play host to DeSales on Sept. 30. 

“It’s our seniors,” coach Chad Davis said. “They’ve hands-down bought into what (assistant) coach (Megan Minnix and I) have been teaching and they’ve been playing their hearts out.” 

Freshman Jessica Murray has six goals and four assists, Grundei has six goals and Bair has five goals and two assists to lead the offense.  

Junior Ava Baker has 67 saves in goal. 

Freshman Lia Wahl also has been a welcome addition, according to Davis. 

Ready is preparing for the Division III district tournament, which holds its drawing Oct. 10. 

“Playing (the teams in the CCL) has toughened us more than probably anyone else could,” Davis said.

Leila Boussedra scored the only goal for the Thomas Worthington field hockey team in a 1-0 win over Shaker Heights on Sept. 25.

Later that day, she set a personal record in cross country with a time of 18:27.24 to finish fourth of 112 runners in the Celtic Clash at Dublin Jerome behind winner Sofia Istnick (17:36.82) of Massillon Jackson.

Boussedra shattered her previous best time of 19:55.5 in the Pickerington Classic on Aug. 28.

The Cardinals had three runners in the top 15, including Alaina Smullen (11th, 19:13.47) and Rosalie Smullen (15th, 19:23.6), to finish fourth (118) behind champion Jackson (57) in the 13-team event.

It was the third consecutive 1-0 win for the field hockey team, which beat New Albany on Sept. 23 on a goal by Cora Hamilton. Boussedra scored the only goal in a win over Hudson on Sept. 18. She was assisted by Amanda Armstrong and Tate Beegle.

Thomas moved to 10-0-1 overall and 6-0 in the COFHL-West with a 4-0 win over Olentangy on Sept. 27.

Hamilton scored two goals and Boussedra and Beegle added one apiece against the Braves. Ellie Conroy had two assists and Hamilton and Campbell Bowers each had one.

Hamilton’s 13 goals and 10 assists led the Cardinals in both categories through 11 games. Boussedra had 12 goals, Beegle had eight goals and nine assists and Emily Kendall had eight assists.

As a team, the Cardinals had allowed just three goals. Goalie Kate McClellan had 14 saves through 11 games.

•The Olentangy Berlin field hockey team improved to 3-7-1 by defeating Dublin Jerome 3-1 on Sept. 27, a win that also accounted for two program records.

Payton Aloi scored two goals and Kennedy Arvai added the other as the Bears earned their first COFHL-West victory. It also was their first home victory in their four seasons.

Berlin continues to increase its record for victories in a season. The Bears had one win in both 2019 and 2020, and they were winless in their inaugural 2018 season.

•The Hartley girls volleyball team hopes the return of junior Ella Brandewie spurs a strong regular-season finish. 

Brandewie was playing for the Team USA U18 Junior National team in Durango, Mexico, in mid-September and missed eight matches, including a 25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21 loss to Watterson on Sept. 23. 

Junior outside hitter Jasmyn Crockett had 15 kills against Watterson and has 144 kills on the season to lead the Hawks, who are 12-4 overall and 1-2 in the CCL. 

Junior middle hitter Kate McLane also has been a standout, according to coach Mike Rahe. 

“We’ll (play) Watterson (on Oct. 5) with (Brandewie), which will help,” Rahe said. “We played really, really well without her (Sept. 23), so we’ll be all right.”

•The Upper Arlington girls volleyball team has rebounded from its first losing season since 2014 by already exceeding its win total from last year.

Under first-year coach Meghan Terwilliger, the Golden Bears were 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the OCC-Central before playing Olentangy Liberty on Sept. 28. UA went 6-14 overall and 3-6 in the league a season ago after winning at least 12 matches every year from 2015-19.

Jenna Harold had a team-leading 140 kills and 23 aces and Lilian Entenmann had 106 kills through 13 matches. Macy Medors led UA in digs with 119 and added 20 aces.

The Bears’ match against Liberty was the first of consecutive meetings with top-10 competition within the OCC-Central. Liberty is ranked third in the state this week by MaxPreps, and UA will travel to fifth-ranked Olentangy Orange on Sept. 30.

•The Olentangy Liberty girls volleyball team rallied from two sets down for a 22-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-7 win over Olentangy Orange on Sept. 23 to remain undefeated.

The Patriots added three more wins over the weekend to move their winning streak to 14 matches before falling to Cleveland St. Joseph Academy 25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22 in the final of the Columbus Invitational Tournament on Sept. 25 at FieldhouseUSA.

The Patriots, who played five matches – 18 sets – in a three-day span, stand at 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the OCC-Central before visiting Upper Arlington on Sept. 28.

Gabi Moulton had 59 assists, Nicole Russell had 30 kills and four blocks, McKenna Cook had 13 kills and Claire Mrukowski added 11 kills to lead the Patriots against Orange. Defensively, Grace Ganz had 19 digs, Abbey Queen had 17 digs and Michelle Ezenekwe had five blocks.

Cook had 112 kills, Moulton had 316 assists, Ganz had 140 digs, Ezenekwe had 35 blocks and Queen had 21 aces to lead the Patriots through their first 11 matches.

•The Olentangy Liberty girls cross country team had four runners in the top 20, scoring 87 points to finish second of 13 teams behind Massillon Jackson (57) in the Celtic Clash on Sept. 25 at Dublin Jerome.

Julia Bockenstette (19:07.82) led the Patriots, finishing 10th of 112 runners. Sarah Gilbert was 14th (19:16.39), Madeline Pohmer was 17th (19:29.72) and Rachel Ziel was 20th (19:39.25).

Wellington girls tennis standout Alexis Burkhalter, who is seeking her third consecutive Division II state tournament berth, has committed to Belmont Abbey.

Burkhalter and teammate Katie Zerbi were state runners-up in doubles last year and finished fourth in 2019.

They were voted the top seed in the Columbus School for Girls sectional that begins Oct. 7 and concludes two days later, and will try to guide the Jaguars to the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division II state tournament.

Wellington will play host to MSL-Ohio rival Columbus Academy in the district final on a date to be determined.

•The Reynoldsburg girls tennis team has continued the success that took place a season ago, when it more than doubled its win total from 2019 by finishing 15-7 overall and 3-2 in the OCC-Buckeye.

With a 3-2 victory over Columbus School for Girls on Sept. 20, the Raiders are 9-5 overall. That includes beating Central Crossing 4-1 on Sept. 13 to finish 4-1 in the league. 

Reynoldsburg’s only league loss was 4-1 to Pickerington Central on Sept. 2. 

For the Division I sectional that concludes Oct. 9 at home, the doubles team of Olivia Cox and Kareen Meoko is the second seed, while Isabella Boskovska and Rowan Toole will comprise the other doubles team. Competing in singles will be Lorelei Dunlap, Halat Fishatsion and Zaina Smith.

•The Central Crossing girls tennis team was 6-10 overall after losing to Granville 5-0 on Sept. 27 to snap a two-match winning streak, but the Comets were one victory away from matching last season’s win total when they went 7-11.

Central Crossing defeated Ready 4-1 on Sept. 23 and Westland 5-0 on Sept. 24. Sophia Toscano and Anna Sinyuk won twice in singles. The doubles teams of Ruth Semchishin and Haley Young and Michelle Jimenez and Adriana Manley also won in both matches.

The Comets finished 2-3 in the OCC-Buckeye, behind champion Pickerington Central (5-0).
