Gunfight with insurgents kills one border guard in tense Indian state

NEW DELHI, June 6 (Reuters) – A gun battle between Indian safety forces and insurgents in Manipur state killed one safety personnel and wounded two others early on Tuesday, the military stated, days after many militants had been killed there in an operation following deadly ethnic clashes.

The northeastern state bordering Myanmar has been tense up to now few weeks, with rioting and ethnic clashes killing at the least 60 individuals and displacing 35,000 since early May. More than 30 militants had been killed final month after safety forces launched a large crackdown.

“Intermittent firing between security forces & a group of insurgents took place throughout the night of 05/06 June,” the Indian Army said on Twitter. “Security forces effectively retaliated to the fire.”

It stated a soldier from the Border Security Force died and two personnel from Assam Rifles, a paramilitary pressure with a concentrate on India’s northeast, had been wounded.

“Search operations (are) in progress,” the military stated.

The ethnic violence started when tribal teams clashed with the bulk Meitei group over economic benefits and quotas given to the tribes. Tribal communities are anxious a few doable extension of their advantages to the Meiteis.
