STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Casey Washington caught a 2-point conversion pass from Brandon Peters to end the first nine-overtime game in NCAA history and lift Illinois over No. 7 Penn State 20-18. The teams were tied at 10 after regulation, exchanged field goals in the first two overtimes, then began to alternate 2-point attempts in the third OT as part of a format tweaked ahead of the 2021 season. Neither team converted until the eighth overtime, when Isaiah Williams ran one in to put Illinois up 18-16. Noah Cain kept the game alive with a 2-point run of his own before Peters and Washington combined to end it in the ninth OT.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — C.J. Stroud threw four touchdown passes and TreVeyon Henderson scored three times to help No. 5 Ohio State rout Indiana 54-7. The Buckeyes have won five straight overall and 25 in a row in Big Ten play. They also extended the nation’s longest active winning streak against one team to 27 consecutive games. After Henderson broke a 7-all tie with a 21-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, the short-handed Hoosiers never had a chance. Ohio State scored the last 47 points, and coach Ryan Day pulled his starters after three quarters.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins combined for 229 yards rushing and four touchdowns, carrying No. 6 Michigan to a 33-7 win over Northwestern. The Wolverines closed strong after a sluggish start. They led by just three points at halftime. It looked as if they might be peeking ahead to next week’s game against ninth-ranked Michigan State on the road. Michigan pulled away from the Wildcats by outscoring them 23-0 in the first 16:40 of the second half. Corum finished with 119 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell completed 24 of 32 passes for 200 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.
UNDATED (AP) — There is a developing College Football Playoff race between an outgoing Big 12 school and an incoming Big 12 school. No. 2 Cincinnati, heading to the Big 12 at some point, and No. 3 Oklahoma, leaving the Big 12 at some point, remained undefeated, though neither was at its best. Two more top-10 teams lost to unranked opponents in Week 8, including an epic offense failure for No. 7 Penn State. Iowa State and Wisconsin surged back into their conference races while No. 23 Pitt put Clemson’s Atlantic Coast Conference championship hopes in critical condition.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Freshmen Ky Thomas and Mar’Keise Irving helped Minnesota trample Maryland 34-16. Thomas and Irving became the fourth and fifth different 100-yard rushers for the Gophers this season. They’re the first pair to get there in the same game for Minnesota in more than two years. The Gophers gained 326 yards on the ground for their third straight victory. Thomas and Irving each had one of Minnesota’s four rushing touchdowns. Taulia Tagovailoa lost a fumble on the opening drive and passed for a late touchdown to Marcus Fleming for Maryland. The Gophers are 5-2. The Terrapins are 4-3.
