Lewis Hamilton has spoken about how he had bananas thrown at him and was repeatedly known as the N-word throughout a “traumatising” faculty profession. The seven-time Formula One world champion, who grew up in a city close to London, detailed the racial abuse within the On Purpose podcast, launched on Monday. The 38-year-old, who’s getting ready for his seventeenth season in F1, stated: “For me, school was the most traumatising and most difficult part of my life.

“I used to be already being bullied on the age of six. At that specific faculty I used to be one in all three children of color and simply greater, stronger, bullying children have been throwing me round a whole lot of the time.

“And the constant jabs, the things that are either thrown at you, like bananas, or people that would use the N-word just so relaxed. People calling you half-caste and not knowing where you fit in. That for me was difficult.

“In my (secondary) faculty there have been six or seven black children out of 1,200 children and three of us have been put outdoors the headmasters’ workplace on a regular basis.”

The British driver said he felt the system was against him, adding that he suppressed “a whole lot of issues”. “I did not really feel I might go house and inform my dad and mom that these children stored calling me the N-word, or I bought bullied or crushed up in school immediately,” he said. “I did not need my dad to suppose I used to be not robust.”

Hamilton remains F1’s only black driver. He has established Mission 44, which aims to enhance the lives of people from under-represented groups, and Ignite, a joint enterprise with his Mercedes team to improve diversity in motor racing.

The British driver, who finished sixth in the 2022 standings, is entering the final year of his huge deal with Mercedes but it is anticipated that he will sign a new multi-year contract. Looking ahead to life after F1, Hamilton added in the podcast, which was recorded in November: “It goes to be actually, actually laborious after I cease racing. I’ve been doing it for 30 years. When you cease, what’s going to match that?

“Nothing is going to match being in a stadium, being at a race, being at the pinnacle of the sport and being at the front of the grid or coming through the grid and that emotion that I get with that. “When I do cease there might be a giant gap so I’m making an attempt to focus and discover issues that may substitute that and be simply as rewarding.”

Hamilton will unveil his new Mercedes on the group’s launch at Silverstone on February 15 forward of the primary spherical of the brand new season in Bahrain on March 5.
