NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file an updated status report in the case relating to the October 3 violence in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 27.
The UP government submitted a sealed cover affidavit in the Supreme Court and informed that it has arrested 10 accused in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.
A bench headed by CJI N V Ramana was informed that the police has also registered FIR for the lynching of three by protesting farmers.
“The investigations cannot be an unending story and the state must dispel the view that the police is dragging its feet about investigation,” the Supreme Court said.
“Statements of four out of 44 witnesses have been recorded by judicial magistrate in Lakhimpur Kheri case,” UP governent informed the Supreme Court.
The apex court further asked UP government to record statement of remaining witnesses of Lakhimpur Kheri incident before judicial magistrate.
SC had on October 8 expressed dissatisfaction over the steps taken by the Uttar Pradesh government in the killing of eight persons.
Ten people, including Ashish Mishra, son of Union minister of state for Home Affairs and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ajay Kumar Mishra ‘Teni’, have been arrested so far in connection with the case.
The top court had said it is “not satisfied” with the action taken by the Uttar Pradesh government in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence and also questioned the state on why accused Ashish Mishra was not arrested so far.
Ashish Mishra had allegedly mowed down farmers with his car.
