America’s space agency NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has sent amazing pictures of Mars in 15 years. Jet Propulsion Laboratory of South California manages it. The Mars Color Imager (MARCI), Context Camera (CTX) and High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) in this MRO capture all the pictures of the red planet far and near. They also collect surface details on zooming of the entire planet at once. With their help, storms, dust storms and changing surface can be seen. The Burj Khalifa of Mars!
HiRISE took this picture from 185 miles (about 297) kilometers above the surface of Mars. A huge dust storm is visible in it. Based on its shadow, it has been found that its height will be more than half a mile, up to about 800 meters. It was the tallest building on earth as the Burj Khalifa of the United Arab Emirates.
Shock’
The atmosphere of Mars is less dense. Therefore debris or meteorites falling from space reach the surface directly. CTX has seen 800 such craters so far. This photo is also taken by HiRISE. The diameter of this crater is 100 feet (30 m) and a large area around it has formed a blast zone. The matter has grown up to 9.3 mi (15 km).
Color changing mars
Earlier, due to lack of atmosphere on Mars, there would not be any movement in sand or dust here, but after observing it with MRO for years, beautiful patterns were found. MRO’s deputies project scientist Leslie Tampari says that the photos of Mars can be interpreted by the color of dunes and waves created by dust. Many of these keep changing their place with the wind.
Moon stain
Mars has two moons – Phobos and Deimos. Phobos is just 13 miles (21) km away. HiRISE’s Lee Stickney Crater of Phobos can be seen in this photo which is 5.6 miles (9 km) wide. There are many questions in the minds of scientists regarding Phobos. Is it a stalled asteroid or a broken part of Mars? Japan will soon send its mission to Phobos and may even land on Phobos before stepping on Mars.
Look home
MRO has not just kept an eye on the red planet while on Mars. Sometimes he even looks back at his house. Something similar is seen in this picture. This is a picture of the Earth and Moon from 4 sets of HiRISE pictures. This was the second time HiRISE had photographed the Earth.
