NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee High School girls tennis team moved to 15-0 on the season by beating the visiting Escanaba Eskymos, 8-0, on a sunny but windy Monday afternoon.
“Monday’s are always a good test of focus and it’s great to see how we responded again,” said NHS coach Kyle Saari in an email. “We’ve stayed even keel and it’s important not to ride the highs and lows as a team, or at individual flights.”
Saari highlighted the play of two of his team members.
“Jillian (Skewis) played a young, solid opponent and played one of her finest matches yet. She hit the 60-win plateau and that’s an impressive mark on the girls’ side of the program.”
Skewis, the No. 2 singles player for Negaunee, beat Sophia Derkos 6-2, 6-1.
Saari also praised his No. 3 singles player.
“Annika (Tervo) has grown stronger and stronger as the year has progressed, too,” Saari said. “All of our singles players are fortunate because they make each other better, and they realize that.”
