MUMBAI: On Wednesday, the state cabinet passed a resolution expressing regret over the death of farmers in the Lakhimpur-Kheri violence.
Ministers stood in silence as a mark of respect and described the deaths as unfortunate.
In the cabinet meeting, chief minister Uddhav Thackeray strongly condemned the incident and criticized the BJP led government in Uttar Pradesh for its misuse of power.
“To condemn the brutality in which farmers were crushed to death under a car, all the three parties have called for a Maharashtra bandh on October 11,” said cabinet minister and NCP state chief Jayant Patil.
He said that no essential services will be affected during the bandh.
“The BJP is trying to stall farmers protests across the country in a barbaric manner. Even days after the Lakhimpur-Kheri incident, there have not been any arrests. And it is necessary to register a protest against such incidents,” said Patil.
The announcement came a day after Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut pitched for a joint Opposition action against BJP. In an editorial in Saamana, Sena said that the one who ordered to fire bullets at farmers at the Jallianwalla Bagh was a British. The one who crushed freedom fighter Babu Genu under a truck in Mumbai (during the independence struggle), while he was protesting against foreign clothes, was also a British, it said. But, the one who crushed farmers fighting for their rights in Lakhimpur-Kheri is the son of a Union minister, the Sena alleged.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Wednesday said the party will protest and resort to a “jail bharo andolan” if their leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, is not released by the Uttar Pradesh Police.
BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, on the other hand, said that the Maharashtra government has ignored the hardships of the farmers who have lost their crops to heavy rainfalls.
“Maharashtra’s farmer has been ignored. There is no decision on helping him. This is an opportunistic government. They do not care about the farmers, this is all being done with a political motive,” said Fadnavis.
