Twin Valley’s football team has been shut down after the school district learned Wednesday that a football player at the school is exhibiting coronavirus symptoms.
Twin Valley is the third Berks football team disrupted by COVID-19 in the last week.
An email alerting parents of Twin Valley High School students was sent Wednesday.
The student-athlete is awaiting test results; he is expected to receive results within 3-5 days.
Friday’s game against Fleetwood has been postponed; the schools are hoping to play Nov. 6.
All football practices and related activities at the school have been canceled for the remainder of the week. No other sports are affected at this time.
In the event of a positive COVID-19 test the school district will work with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and take recommended steps “to protect the health of our students and staff,” according to the letter from Twin Valley principal William Clements.
If the student-athlete in question tests positive it’s possible he had contact with other members of the team and that a quarantine could take place. That could lead to an extended shutdown of the program.
The Raiders’ next game is at Wyomissing Oct. 10.
If any individuals at Twin Valley test positive for COVID-19 they will be required to remain quarantined at home for at least 10 days, until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours (without the aid of fever-reducing medications) and until there is improvement in respiratory symptoms, according to the letter.
“Please know that the health, safety and well-being of our students, families and staff remains our top priority,” Clements wrote. “We are taking these steps out of an abundance of caution.”
Fleetwood moved quickly to fill the open date on its schedule; the Tigers will play at East Pennsboro Friday.
Twin Valley is the latest in a growing list of Berks athletic programs which have been shut down due to COVID-19.
Last week Gov. Mifflin halted all athletic activity and went to virtual learning when there was a positive COVID-19 test at the school. The Mustangs missed their scheduled football game against Central Dauphin East and all athletic activities at the school were shut down for three days.
Hamburg, which saw its game at Halifax postponed on Friday due to a potential COVID-19 test at that school, eventually had to cancel that game on Monday when the school learned there was a possible exposure on the Hawks’ team.
Voluntary workouts at Exeter, Muhlenberg, Reading High, Schuylkill Valley and Wyomissing were shut down during the summer for various coronavirus-related exposures or positive tests.
The Reading School Board eventually suspended all fall sports.
A Conrad Weiser player tested positive in early September; an evaluation by the DOH determined the football team did not need to shut down at that time.
