Pa. Gov. Tom Wolf and Health Department Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine have changed their order related to gathering limitations in the state.

Originally, indoor events were restricted to just 25 people, while outdoor events could have up to 250. Now, however, the maximum capacity will be determined based on a venue’s maximum occupancy.

It breaks down like this:

Maximum Occupancy – Allowable Indoor Rate

0-2,000 people – 20% of Maximum Occupancy

2,001 – 10,000 people – 15% of Maximum Occupancy

Over 10,000 people – 10% of Maximum Occupancy up to 3,750 people

Maximum Occupancy – Allowable Outdoor Rate

0-2,000 people – 25% of Maximum Occupancy

2,001 – 10,000 people – 20% of Maximum Occupancy

Over 10,000 people – 15% of Maximum Occupancy up to 7,500 people

The new orders, which go into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, will allow more people to attend everything from high school athletic events to pro sports, meetings, concerts, and more. Mask wearing, social distancing, and other coronavirus mitigation orders from the state must still be followed, and venues are encouraged to promote things like staggered arrival time and mobile ticketing, among other things. Additionally, the new orders do not change the fact that bars and restaurants can only serve alcohol in the same transaction as a prepared meal, and the caps apply to everything from wedding venues to local town halls. “Pennsylvanians must continue to social distance and wear masks as we prepare to fight the virus through the fall and winter,” Wolf said in a news release.

“Regardless of the size of an event or gathering, those things are still imperative to stopping the spread of COVID. We know everyone has sacrificed in many ways and today’s announcement reflects a gradual adjustment to our lives as we learn how we can do things safely until we have a cure, or an effective vaccine is widely available.”

Added Levine:

“We will closely monitor cases and outbreaks and if our case investigation and contact tracing efforts determine that events or gatherings are the source of an outbreak, we can and will dial back these new limits. Public health and safety are our first concern and will always remain as such.”
