PETOSKEY — The Rotary Club of Petoskey is hosting a new community event this Saturday in hopes of starting a new fall tradition as well as raise funds for improvements to Petoskey’s Winter Sports Park.
The new “Fall Festival” will be, as told by club members, a “… new and hopefully annual tradition to celebrate the end of summer and beginning of fall for years to come.”
“We are doing this as it’s the Petoskey Rotary Club’s centennial anniversary this year but part of that is a project to help fundraise for improvements to the park,” said Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce president and Petoskey Rotary Club member Nikki Devitt.
“The city is fundraising as are we because we want to help build this dream park that the community can enjoy year round. It isn’t just a ‘winter’ sports park,” she said.
One of the larger improvements that fundraising will go towards is a roof over the ice rink.
The upcoming event aims to help meet the fundraising goals by bringing the community a one-day event filled with kids games, food trucks, wine from Mackinaw Trail Winery and beer from Beards Brewery with a specially brewed “Rotary Red” on tap.
Live music will also be offered from 6-8 p.m. with one of Petoskey’s newest bands Levitator.
“To be invited to help an event that directly gets more people outside is very exciting for us,” said band member Robby Hovie. “It feels like we’re giving back directly to the parks we’ve spent so many years visiting and that’s pretty special.”
Entrance to the event is free however, there will be tickets available for purchase for drinks and to enter the pumpkin roll.
“The pumpkin roll will be so fun. It’s literally a pumpkin roll down the big sledding hill,” said Devitt. “We will have pumpkins people can purchase with numbers on them. They’ll all get dumped from a truck at the top of the hill and the pumpkins that make it the furtherest have a chance to win some awesome prizes.”
The event in its entirety is 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 and will be rain or shine. In the chance of rain, the event will mostly be moved inside the community center at the park.
