Wednesday’s semifinal matchup had all the intensity inherent in a playoff contest between two of Marin County’s greatest rivals. Undefeated Redwood (13-0-2) advances to the MCAL field hockey title game after a 2-0 victory over Marin Catholic.

“This is a great rivalry,” Redwood coach Jen Reidy said. “It did get intense out there at times.”

Sophomore Samantha Haan got the top-seeded Giants rolling in the third period with an assist from Caroline Goodhart to break the stalemate. Older sister Cassidy Haan followed five minutes later with a goal off the assist from Gabby Levin-Meer.

“Samantha and Cassidy play so well together,” Redwood co-coach Aline Copp said. “It’s intuitive. They make great passes to each other. When they’re on the field together, they’re a step ahead of everyone else, like they know what the other one’s going to do and where they’ll be.”

Redwood swept the regular season series with Marin Catholic, with scores of 8-0 and 2-0.

The loss ends the season for No 4. Marin Catholic (5-6-4) and the high school careers of the Wildcats’ senior core, including sisters Sailor and Piper Berger, who have helped establish the program.

Friday’s MCAL title game will mark the end of the season for local field hockey, as the North Coast Section does not yet have a playoff format established for the sport, despite campaigns from supporters in the Bay Area.

Girls water polo

Senior Abby Brooks scored the game-winning goal in the third period of sudden-death overtime to lift top-seeded Tam to an 8-7 MCAL semifinal victory against No. 4 Archie Williams on Wednesday.

“It was insane,” Tam coach Paul Hettler said. “It went four regular periods, two overtime periods and three sudden-death periods. “Archie tied it up once at the end of regulation and in overtime with last-minute shots that scored basically at the buzzer. That just fueled the insanity.”

Maja Layden paced the Red-tailed Hawks with three goals. Brooks ad Maddie Uhlhorn-Thornton each scored twice and Anna Plante had the other goal. Tam advances to Saturday’s morning’s MCAL title game with the victory.

“It was two very well matched teams,” Hettler said. “We beat them in the regular season and this was a much better team that we faced tonight. My compliments to them for really showing up and playing hard. My girls never gave up, just a huge amount of heart an effort by the Tam girls tonight.”

Boys water polo

Jake Dixon led the Falcons with five goals as the top-seeded Archie Williams (19-4) stopped No. 4 Marin Academy, 16-5, in the MCAL boys water polo semifinals on Wednesday.

Connor Dickinson scored twice for Marin Academy (13-6).

The result was much closer in the only other meeting between these two teams, with the Peregrine Falcons holding on for a 14-10 victory in September.

Girls tennis

Annabelle Halloran and Sophia Tiemens picked up singles wins to help Tam secure the No. 3 seed in Friday’s MCAL semifinals following a 5-1 victory against San Rafael.

The Red-tailed Hawks are set to face No. 2 Branson at College of Marin on Friday, weather permitting. The MCAL championship is scheduled for Monday at Novato High.

  • Jordan Marotto, Annesley Kravitt and Julia Laury were victorious at Nos. 2-4 singles, respectively, as Redwood wrapped up the top seed in the playoffs following a 6-1 victory against Branson. The Giants will host No. 4 Archie Williams at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Branson’s Anna Lardner picked up the win at No. 1 singles.
  • Archie Williams played its final makeup game from the regular season, defeating Novato 6-1. Carly Amborn, Ana Fatjo and Audrey Johnson led the way by taking the top three singles matches, in that order.
