Delhi earthquake: Massive 4.7 magnitude quake rocks India – ‘Building still shaking’

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has confirmed a 4.7 magnitude quake struck 78km (48 miles) south-west of Farīdābād, India today. The quake occurred at 7pm local time, 2.30pm BST. As it stands, no casualties have been reported. There have been no reports of damage to buildings in the capital as of yet. 

One local tweeted: “Major earthqake in Delhi.

“Building still shaking. God!”

Another said: “Felt earthquake while sitting on sofa in living room.”

A third said: “I felt it for three seconds but it was of considerable magnitude.”

The EMSC also confirmed the earthquake hit a depth of 35km (21 miles). 

Since April, the Dehli area has reported 15 earthquakes. 

Most of these have been low to medium intensity with no serious damage reported. 

Dehli chief minister, Arvina Kejriwal said: “Mild earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi some time ago.

The powerful quake occurred near the Pacific Coast in Oaxaca. 

Due to the severity of the earthquake, six people were killed. 

The quake had also caused Petroleos Mexicanos’ refinery to be shut down for a temporary period of time. 

President of the country, Andrés Manuel López Obrador said: “Fortunately there was no major damage.

“I hope and I wish with all my soul that there will be no more damaging aftershocks.”

A Tsunami alert was initially issued before being rescinded by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 

A further earthquake at 4.9 magnitude hit the same region on June 29.
