Favourite to win the event, debutant Sheuli heaved 313kg (143kg+170kg) to grab the gold at NEC Hall on Sunday.
Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad, who gave Sheuli a tough competition, ended as the second best lifter in the event. He had a best effort of 303kg (138kg+165kg). Canada’s Shad Darsigny was third with a total lift of 298kg (135kg+163kg).
Sheuli, a junior world championship silver medallist, executed three clean lifts — 137kg, 140kg and 143kg — in the snatch section. His 143kg effort helped him smash the Games record and improve his personal best.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi shared a video of him interacting with the Indian contingent for the 2022 edition of the CWG games. In the video, PM Modi can be seen asking Sheuli about the latter’s composed and focused behaviour and how the budding star likes movies but cannot see them because of his busy schedule. Later Modi says that once the young athlete returns with a gold medal he can see films, as he will have ample time to entertain himself.
Shiv Sena MP supports Sanjay Raut, says will not bow down to ED
After claims that Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had been arrested by the ED, Shiv Sena MP Vinayak Raut on Sunday extended his support and said that the party will not bow down in front of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). His remarks came after the ED officials seized Rs 11.50 lakh in unaccounted cash from the residence of Raut on Sunday and the Shiv Sena MP said that he was unsure about Sanjay Raut’s arrest.
Sri Lanka’s President Wickremesinghe says he has no home to go
Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Sunday said that there is no point in demanding that he “goes home” as he has no home to go to while referring to the threats received from the protestors. Speaking in Kandy, a city in Sri Lanka, Wickremesinghe said that some people have threatened to stage protests, demanding that he goes home, Colombo Gazette reported. In response, Wickremesinghe said, “I am appealing to you not to do that as I have no home to go to.”
Biden tests positive for COVID-19, second day in a row
President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 for the second straight day, in what appears to be a rare case of “rebound” following treatment with an anti-viral drug. In a letter noting the positive test, Dr Kevin O’Connor, the White House physician, said Sunday that the president “continues to feel well” and will keep on working from the executive residence while he isolates.
Rajasthan government transfers 18 bureaucrats
The Rajasthan government has transferred 18 bureaucrats, including seven Indian Administrative Service officers. The Department of Personnel released the transfer lists late on Sunday night. According to the lists, Rajasthan Pollution Control Board chairman Sudhansh Pant has been appointed as the director general of the Rajasthan Institute of Public Administration (RIPA). Project director of Rajasthan Urban Infrastructure Development Project (RUIDP) Kumarpal Gautam has been appointed as the excise commissioner.
Drone explosion hits Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters
A small explosive device carried by a makeshift drone blew up at the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet on the Crimean Peninsula, wounding six people and prompting the cancellation of ceremonies there honouring Russia’s navy, authorities said. Meanwhile, one of Ukraine’s richest men, a grain merchant, was killed in what Ukrainian authorities said was a carefully targeted Russian missile strike on his home. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the drone explosion on Sunday in a courtyard at the naval headquarters in the city of Sevastopol. But the seemingly improvised, small-scale nature of the attack raised the possibility that it was the work of Ukrainian insurgents trying to drive out Russian forces.

Nikhat Zareen storms into quarterfinals, Shiva Thapa, Sumit bow out
World champion Nikhat Zareen sailed into the women’s 50kg quarterfinals but it was curtains for Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) and Sumit Kundu (75kg)as they made round of 16 exits in their respective weight categories at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. While Zareen knocked out Helena Ismael Bagao of Mozambique to storm into the last eight round of the women’s lightweight category winning by RSC (Referee stopping contest), Thapa lost 1-4 to world championship bronze medallist Reese Lynch of Scotland to make a disappointing exit from the Games. Sumit went down to Australia’s Callum Peters by a 0-5 unanimous verdict in the middleweight pre-quarterfinals.
Srihari Nataraj qualifies for men’s 50m backstroke finals, Sajan finishes 9th
Continuing his impressive run, ace Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj advanced to the finals of the men’s 50m backstroke event at the Commonwealth Games here on Sunday. The 21-year-old clocked 25.38 to emerge the eighth fastest swimmer across semifinals to make his second final of the Birmingham Games. The seasoned Sajan Prakash, on the other hand, finished a disappointing ninth the men’s 200m butterfly, his pet event. Nataraj had clocked 25.52 seconds in heats, making the 50m backstroke semifinals.
FIR against Sanjay Raut on complaint of woman witness in money laundering case
Mumbai police on Sunday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on the charge of insulting the modesty of woman on the complaint lodged by a witness in a money laundering case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate claiming she was threatened. The complaint was lodged at Vakola police station by the witness, Swapna Patkar, a police official said on Sunday night. Patkar had approached the police recently claiming she was given rape and murder threat in a typed paper, which was inserted in a newspaper delivered to her on July 15, he said.
Ghosal, Joshna enter singles quarterfinals at CWG
Leading India squash player Saurav Ghosal on Sunday joined Joshna Chinappa in the singles quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. The world number 15 from India blanked Canadian David Baillargeon, ranked 62, 3-0 to reach the last eight stage. The final scoreline read 11-6, 11-2, 11-6. Ghosal was hardly troubled in the first two games. In the third, the Canadian led 3-0 before the Indian levelled it to 3-3. After that, he took the decisive lead. India is eyeing its first squash medal in the Commonwealth Games.
