Cortland, N.Y. — SUNY Cortland will ramp up testing of students and will indefinitely extend its prior ban on sporting events and Greek life events in an effort to contain a batch of confirmed Covid-19 cases on campus.
As of Friday, there were at least 34 confirmed cases on the Cortland campus.
The college plans to test at least 1,000 students per week and will double the frequency of wastewater testing to determine where, exactly, the virus is on campus.
Cortland will use a testing program developed by SUNY Upstate to search for the virus in wastewater.
Last week, Cortland announced it would suspend all athletic events and certain Greek life activities for one week after the number of cases on campus rose from six to 34. Those activities may be restored once cases start to decline.
SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras visited the campus Sunday to announce the extension of those bans, along with college officials.
Malatras also visited Tompkins Cortland County Community College to announce classes there would resume on campus this week after a two-week pause. That pause was put in place Sept. 2. Malatras said at least one student who later tested positive was prevented from attending classes.
“TC3 prevented a major outbreak in cases with swift and prudent action—and can now resume in-person learning this week,” Malatras said in a statement. “It’s proof that if we monitor cases closely, respond with proactive, urgent action, and achieve campus-wide compliance with safety protocols, we can control this virus.”
