A Belgian court on Tuesday suspended the closure of entertainment venues over COVID-19, AFP reports.

The Council of State, Belgium’s supreme administrative court, said the order was “disproportionate”,noting that even if the Omicron variant required further restrictions, the government needed to justify restrictions on health grounds.

The government announced on Dec. 22 that concert halls, cinemas and other entertainment venues were to close from the weekend to combat further spread of Omicron.

The European country has so far recorded 2,052,871 COVID-19 infections with 28,218 deaths.
