Sao Paulo (AP) —The Brazilian president claimed on Sunday that the COVID-19 protocol in a football match prevented him from participating in the match.
Jair Bolsonaro said he wanted to go to the Brazilian Championship match in Santos, but he didn’t because he wasn’t vaccinated.
“Why a vaccine passport? I wanted to see Santos now, but they said I needed to be vaccinated. Why should I do that?” Bolsonaro told a journalist near Santos Told.
Bolsonaro is currently investigating how to deal with a pandemic in the Senate. According to data from the Ministry of Health, Brazil has more than 600,000 confirmed deaths from COVID-19.
Santos said Bolsonaro had not asked for participation in the match. In this match, Santos defeated Gremio 1-0 at Vila Miro Stadium.
Authorities this week allowed the club to fill 30% of the seats available in the Brazilian Championship Game.
A protocol agreed by the Brazilian Football Federation states that everyone in the stadium needs to be vaccinated and recently tested.
