One of the biggest storylines from Sunday’s 21-11 Patriots win over the Dolphins was immediately after the game tempers flared on the field with Cam Newton mixing it up with several members of the Dolphins.
Newton needed to be restrained by a few of his teammates, including Rex Burkhead.
Speaking after the game, the Patriots quarterback confirmed some of the Dolphins tried to rip off his chain and that was why he was so upset.
Appearing on The Greg Hill Show Monday morning, Newton shared the meaning of the chain, which explains why he acted the way he did.
“From where I am from, that’s just a sign of disrespect,” he said. “I am all about keeping everything within the confines of the game. … Good thing I went to a good jeweler and got the credentials. They didn’t do too much damage.”
Newton added: “On a serious note, it is a chain that has all of my children and their birthstone on it. You could only imagine for all the fathers that’s out there any type of sign disrespect for that chain. I don’t wear chains to represent my hood, which I should. I don’t wear chains with thug life on it, Superman, or things like that.
“… I am not a big person of tattoos, so I try and get anything that commemorates something that’s dear to my life on something that I can wear. It’s truly dear to me. So the chain that they tried to pull was the one that had each and every child that I have and their birthstones.”
As for Bill Belichick’s reaction?
“Let’s just say Bill was Bill,” Newton said.
And even though there was video of Newton grabbing his hamstring after being pulled aside by Burkhead, he downplayed it.
“I don’t know where that came from,” Newton said. “I didn’t have no hamstring problems. We won, so that means I’m not hurt no more.”
While things likely won’t get chippy after every game, the trash-talk between Newton and opposing defenses could be a theme as the Patriots quarterback said that type of stuff helps him get “competitively engaged.”
“It’s a football game. It’s not ballet. It’s not tennis. Nothing against those specific sports, but it’s just fun,” he said. “… If you can’t give it, you better be able to prove it. For us as the game goes on, we don’t get the luxury of hearing the crowds this year, at least for the early part of it. So, therefore you have to find ways to get yourself going at the end of the day in someway shape or form that you know how.
“For me, I find any person, preferably on the opposite side of the team that will keep me competitively engaged. Thanks to those guys, they did that.”
Newton and the Patriots will travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks next Sunday night.
