CIAC approves H.S. winter sports regular season with no state tournaments

Written by corres2

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Board of Directors approved a plan for a modified high school winter sports season on Thursday.

The plan includes a 12-game regular season for the following sports — basketball (boys and girls), ice hockey, boys’ swimming and gymnastics — but no postseason state tournaments as previously considered.

Instead, schools will be allowed to stage regional postseason experiences (March 15-29), similar to what the Eastern Connecticut Conference and Shoreline Conferences held in the fall.

Teams can begin preseason practice on Tuesday (Jan. 19), and the regular season can start on Monday, Feb. 8.

Wrestling, indoor track and competitive cheer/dance will not be held this winter, although the CIAC will consider an indoor/outdoor track experience in March.

Athletes, coaches and officials must always wear masks, although swimmers can remove their masks before entering the pool and gymnastics can remove their masks before competing on individual apparatuses. Basketball and hockey athletes will be allowed mask breaks and the opportunity to make multiple mask changes.

This story will be updated.
