•Senior quarterback Amare Jenkins of the Dublin Scioto football team turned in a record-setting performance in leading the Irish to a 71-0 win over Franklin Heights on Oct. 1.

Jenkins tossed a single-game program-record six touchdown passes and set the single-season program record for touchdown passes (21).

Trevor Shepperd (2003 graduate) and Evan DeMars (2013) each held the previous single-game record (5), with DeMars also holding the previous single-season record (19).

“It’s a very humbling achievement,” Jenkins said. “I’m thankful for my coaches who have put me in situations where they trust me to throw the football. I believe none of this would have been possible without the help of my great offensive line, which has allowed me to deliver the football. Also, the help of my receivers who have made outstanding plays throughout this season.”

The Irish are 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the OCC-Capital heading into their game against visiting Delaware on Oct. 8.

•A 0-2 start to CCL play shifted the DeSales boys soccer team’s focus to finishing strong and, as coach Domenic Romanelli said, “playing for the (district) tournament.”

DeSales was 6-4-3 overall before finishing league play Oct. 5 against St. Charles.

The Stallions have battled various injuries, including the season-long absence of forward Andrew Shaffer because of a torn meniscus and an early injury to defender Andy Shoemaker. DeSales won consecutive games for the first time this season last week, defeating host Columbus Academy 3-1 on Sept. 29 and visiting Bloom-Carroll 5-1 the next night.

“We’ll see how the draw goes and we’ll make a decision, (potentially) to play Watterson in a district final or not,” Romanelli said. “One thing we’ve had different is having Andy Shoemaker back. He was hurt a lot of the year … but lately he’s playing 80 minutes as a dependable center back. Enoch (Oye) and (Christian) Lehman have had time back there, too, but I am waiting for the light bulb to go on. Sometimes, it’s been a tough team to figure out.”

Luca Romanelli and Alex Shaffer each had seven goals to lead the team before Oct. 5.

DeSales was ranked second in last week’s Division II district poll, behind Watterson and ahead of Hartley and Bexley.
