Citing COVID-19 safety concerns, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School officials announced Tuesday they postponed the start of classes until Sept. 8 and will not be competing in sports this fall.

Schools will begin the year with virtual learning, then reassess the situation in October, according to a statement published to the school system’s website.

With a high school enrollment of approximately 215 students, the Braves compete in Class A for cross country, golf and volleyball. They sdare members of the All Nations Conference for football.

C-EB is located on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in north-central South Dakota. The school district covers sections of Dewey and Ziebach Counties. As of Tuesday, the two counties have 46 active coronavirus cases (48 total confirmed cases) with zero deaths, according to the state Department of Health.

“This is a new learning experience for students, parents, guardians, teachers and staff,” the statement on their website reads. “We look forward to beginning this new learning experience with you. We know there will be many challenges and with everyone working together, great things can happen.”
