COVENTRY – COVID-19 took Coventry High School students’ sports and extracurriculars away in the spring at the end of the 2019-20 school year.
Now budget cuts might take them away for 2020-21.
Friday, a group of roughly 75 students and parents gathered outside the Coventry Public School’s offices, protesting against potential budget cuts that would remove sports and after-school activities like National Honors Society.

Sports was a headline issue because the Rhode Island Interscholastic League set a deadline of Sept. 18 for schools to notify their intent to participate in fall sports. RIIL Executive Director Mike Lunney said the deadline wasn’t set in stone and the league is aware of what’s happening in Coventry and will work with the town so students could participate this fall.
