NEW DELHI: In keeping with a moderation in India’s Covid curve, the average daily positivity rate has dropped over the last three weeks (week on week) to 6.8% during September 30-October 6 from 9.2% during September 16-22, mainly driven by a decline in average daily new cases even as testing increased.
Over eight crore tests have been conducted in India so far and around 80 lakh tests were conducted in the last week, health secretary Rajesh Bhushan said. More recoveries than new cases have also helped keep active cases under check. Active cases — depicting the country’s actual caseload — have remained below 10 lakh for the last two weeks even as officials cautioned against complacency, particularly during the approaching festival season and onset of winters.
The all India growth rate of confirmed cases has turned negative on a few days recently and on October 6 it stood at 0.9%. There has been a moderation of the growth rate in high caseload states like Maharashtra where it was 0.7%, while it was 0.6% in Andhra Pradesh where the curve is steep but showing signs of slowing. It is 1.1% in Karnataka, 0.9% in Tamil Nadu and 0.7% in UP.
There were 919,023 active cases in India on October 6, of which 232,721 are in Maharashtra alone, 51,060 in Andhra Pradesh, 51,496 in Karnataka, 45,881 in Tamil Nadu, 45,024 in UP, 23,080 in Delhi and 27,717 in West Bengal. There has been a rise in cases in Kerala which has 84,958 active cases. With 61,267 new cases reported, around 77% of active cases are in 10 states.
During September 2-8, the positivity rate was 8.3%, which rose to 9.2% during September 16-22 but over the last three weeks it has dropped to 6.8% in the September 30-October 6 week. The drop to 8% or thereabouts was seen as a success and the government is pressing states to keep on propagating the need for safe behaviour along with sustained higher levels of testing.
Bhushan said, “It is too early to take a call on the trend of active Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, whether it is stabilising or not, we need to observe for more time.”
