Election 2022 Live Updates: The first phase of the assembly polls is scheduled for Shamli, Hapur, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Mathura, and Agra districts of Uttar Pradesh.

The first phase of the seven-phase assembly elections will cover the ‘Jat-dominant belt’ of the western part of Uttar Pradesh. As many as 623 candidates are in the fray for the first phase of the assembly polls in 58 seats of 11 UP districts. Nearly 2.27 crore voters will decide the fate of these candidates. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.

    Nearly 8% voter turnout by 9am in 58 seats of west UP

    Despite cold day conditions and foggy weather in western Uttar Pradesh, the voter turnout remained over 8% in most of the Uttar Pradesh districts. The polling percentage in Agra and Mathura was 8.1% and 8.4%, respectively.

    Voter turnout:

    Aligarh – 8.39 %

    Meerut – 9%

    Hapur – 8.16%

    Bulandshahar – 7.34%

    Gautam Buddha Nagar – 8.33%

    Muzaffarnagar -7.5% 

    Shamli- 7.7%

Farmers, employment in focus as Congress unveils UP manifesto

  • The manifesto promised a minimum support price (MSP) of 2,500 per quintal for wheat and paddy, and 400 per quintal price for sugarcane.

West UP kicks off battle for heartland

  • This time around the contest is expected to be more heated. The yearlong protests against three now-scrapped central farm laws galvanised farm groups and the Opposition have attempted to counter the communal polarisation between the Jats and Muslims that erupted after the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.

West UP turns fortress; 22.8 million to decide fate of 623 candidates

India’s heart the top prize as election cycle kicks off today

The UP polls stand out for their sheer scale — at least 150 million voters are eligible to exercise their choice in close to 175,000 polling booths in the state’s 403 assembly segments over seven phases of polling.

Factors at play in turbulent west UP

The seven phases of polling in Uttar Pradesh move from west to east. The first round of polling will see voting in nine of the 71 districts in the state. Agra, Aligarh and Mathura are some of the districts that will vote today.
