Using WhatsApp on multiple devices was always a challenge. One had the choice of the Web version but it didn’t really have all the features. The instant messaging platform has solved the problem by rolling out multi-device support. Wondering what the feature is, how it works and if you can use it or not? We explain all you need to know about WhatsApp multi-device support.
What is the multi-device support on WhatsApp?
The multi-device support feature allows smartphone users to use their WhatsApp account on other devices. They won’t require the phones to be connected to the Internet to use the feature.
On how many devices can you use WhatsApp?
You can use WhatsApp on up to four companion devices at one time, but can only have one phone connected to your WhatsApp account at one time.
Does this mean less dependence on the phone?
Not really as you will still need to register your WhatsApp account and link new devices with your phone.
How can you get the multi-device support feature?
The multi-device beta is currently available to people using the latest version of WhatsApp or the WhatsApp Business app on Android and iPhone.
How to use the multi-device support feature?
For Android smartphone users, here’s what you need to do:
Open WhatsApp > tap on More Options
Tap Linked Devices
Tap on multi-device beta
Tap Join BETA.
For iPhone users, here are the steps you need to follow:
Go to WhatsApp Settings
Tap Linked Devices
Tap on multi-device beta
Tap Join Beta
After joining the multi-device beta, you’ll need to relink your companion devices. For instance, if you have a MacBook then download the WhatsApp app from the App Store and you will need to scan a QR code that pops up on the Mac app to link it with your WhatsApp account. After that it isn’t necessary that you must have your phone with you to use it on companion devices. Even if your smartphone is switched off, you can continue to use WhatsApp on your MacBook or desktop or any other laptop.
Can you finally use WhatsApp on an iPad or tablet?
No, you can’t. Multi-device support is not available on tablets and is meant only for Web, Desktop and Facebook (Meta) Portal devices.
Can you use the same WhatsApp account on two smartphones?
No. The smartphone remains your ‘primary’ device and cannot be a companion device.
Which are the WhatsApp features that won’t work on other devices?
You will not be able to see live location on companion devices. Also, you can’t create or view a broadcast list. The link preview feature from WhatsApp Web will also not work on companion devices. iPhone users will not be able to clear or delete chats on companion devices. Users will also not be able to message or call someone who is using a very old version of WhatsApp on their phone.
