Cross country is set to be only Drury sport competing for a championship this fall.
That’s after the Great Lakes Valley Conference decided to postpone football, volleyball and soccer to next spring.
“That’s going to be quite the puzzle to put together now that we’re going to have all those sports happening in the same semester,” said Drury Athletic Director Corey Bray.
It’s a puzzle Bray and other athletic directors within the GLVC are tasked with piecing together for the first time.
“Every weekend we’re going to have multiple competitions going on and we’re going to have to figure out how to staff those competitions and quite frankly we’re going to need help,” Bray said. “We’re going to need help to pull it all off.”
A lot of that help will come in the form of volunteers. For now, Bray and his GLVC counterparts have begun the scheduling process. While it’s not ideal, it’s at least a concrete plan.
“There’s so much uncertain about what’s going on that it just feels good to have some decision made and be able to have a direction to go to now,” Bray said.
The conference says a decision on winter sports will be made by October 1. Like so many of us, Bray hopes to receive some good news two months from now.
“That one word of hope is what I’m focusing on, especially now that we’ve got some direction to go in and [I’m hoping] that we’ll have some fans here at [The] O’Reilly [Center] cheering on the Panthers and the Lady Panthers and having a good old time winning some ball games,” Bray said.
The GLVC is not alone in its decision, becoming the 11th NCAA Division II conference to postpone fall sports.
Unlike Drury, SBU and Missouri S&T will need to fully reschedule their football seasons.
