WOMEN’S SOCCER
Late goal doesn’t help Scots
DECATUR — The Monmouth College women’s soccer team got a late goal on Wednesday night but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 3-1 loss at Millikin.
The Fighting Scots equaled Millikin with six shots on goal but ultimately fell to 1-6 on the season. The Big Blue scored just over seven minutes into the game on a deflection and the score remained 1-0 through the rest of the first half.
Millikin doubled the lead eight minutes into the second half and eventually made it 3-0 with just under seven minutes to play. The Scots got on the board with 2:46 to play as Millikin was whistled for a foul in the box. Hadyn DeLeeuw stepped up and drilled the penalty kick for her first goal of the season.
Knox claims win over Dubuque
DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Knox College women’s soccer team defeated Dubuque 3-0 on Wednesday.
The victory snaps a three game winless streak for the Prairie Fire, and puts their season record at 2-5-1.
Early in the first half, Knox drew plenty of fouls, as its physical play put the Spartans in tough spots all over the field. In the 21st minute, Lydia Mitchell broke open the tie with her fifth goal of the year. Nine minutes later, she would provide an assist on Emma Art’s goal, giving the Prairie Fire their second goal of the game.
Knox had several more prime goal scoring opportunities throughout the half that warranted saves from the Dubuque goalkeeper, but the score remained 2-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Prairie Fire managed to not only get off eight shots, but also get half of those on goal, an impressive conversion rate. Heaven Garcia and Louise Schoeffel both had efficient halves, shooting the ball with purpose while also providing flow in the offensive attack.
In the 84th minute, another Knox goal sealed the deal on a game.
