The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) has voted to approve plans for a return of the winter sports season, according to an official announcement Wednesday.
Basketball, hockey, indoor track and field, and swimming and diving will all hold regular season play, but the conference won’t have any playoffs, and spectators won’t be allowed at any events.
Per the release, Saint Mary’s and the rest of the MIAC basketball and hockey teams will have a seven-game conference schedule starting Feb. 6. Teams can look at scheduling non-conference games starting Jan. 29.
Programs that opt out may still play non-conference games and/or practice, according to the release.
Per the release, “MIAC indoor track and field and swimming and diving programs will be able to participate in regular-season meets at the discretion of each institution, as there is no assigned conference schedule for these sports; however, due to safety and logistical concerns, the typical postseason conference championship meets for these sports will not be held this winter.”
The NCAA Division III blanket waiver means no athletes will be charged a year of eligibility for competing in this season.
