KOLKATA: Promoted Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC) made a winning start to their I-League campaign as they edged debutants Sudeva Delhi FC by a solitary goal at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.
After a goalless first half, Faisal Ali scored the first of 2020-21 I-League around the hour mark and that proved to be the difference between the two sides.
It was a sedate start with neither team able to impose themselves on the game. Sudeva’s Kean Lewis made a few darting runs down the left channel and MSC goalkeeper Rafique Ali did well to collect his angled drive in the seventh minute. At the other end, Suraj Rawat delivered a quality ball that was just ahead of striker Raphael Odoyin.
The best chance of the half fell to Sudeva, who had an all-Indian squad. Pintu Mahata essayed a deep cross which Kean tried to side-volley. His connection wasn’t the best as the ball looped up. Ajay Singh went for it but, under the challenge from rival custodian, headed over.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 58th minute. A Sudeva player failed to clear a diagonal ball, allowing Faisal to go through, evade the challenge of Gursimrat Singh and place it past goalkeeper Rakshit Dagar.
MSC who could have doubled the advantage had Gurtej Singh done better from a Nikhil Kadam free-kick.
The Delhi side had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 82nd minute when Kean found Mahesh Singh in space in the box but the latter dithered in taking the shot. Kean himself created another scare for MSC in the dying minutes but the Kolkata side held on for three points.
In the day’s second match, Pritam Singh found the back of the net in the 19th minute to help Punjab FC down Aizawl FC at Kalyani Stadium.
