Ludhiana: After getting a positive response from young sportspersons with regard to attending practice sessions, the Punjab sports department will soon resume these at five training centres of the district.
As per information provided by coaches, the attendance percentage has increased from 10% to 40% in the first week of October. Earlier, the sports department had withdrawn its decision to resume normal practice sessions because of poor response from players in attending the same in view of the constant rise in the numbers of Covid cases.
The sports department has also identified five sports disciplines, which include athletic, weightlifting, gymnastic, shooting and volleyball, in which players use equipment but there is no direct physical contact among the players.
Although there are 15 government coaching centres of the district sports department at the district level, only five will reopen for in the next few days and the remaining will remain functional for physical training sessions only. One of the major reasons for the development plan of the sports department to resume normal practice sessions is attributed to low count of Covid-19 cases reported in the district in the past several days continuously.
Parents of several young sportspersons maintained that after noticing constant decline in the number of Covid cases across the district, they have agreed to send their wards to different coaching centres of the district for continuing with their sports activities.
Rajesh Sharma, whose children are getting training in gymnastics at a coaching centre of the sports department, said, “For the past few days, we are getting regular updates on sharp decline in the number of Covid cases in the district, which is a matter of relief for parents. It has made us a bit relaxed and we have decided to send our children to training centres in the district after following all standard safety protocols.”
Parents maintained that the district health department has also indicated that the peak of Covid virus has just passed, which is apparent from the fact that they have ended up all restrictions like Sunday lockdown and night curfew and now it’s safe to assume normal working after following all safety measures.
District sports officer Ravinder Singh said, “After looking at the present circumstances of the district, we are preparing to resume the normal practice in five sports disciplines in the next few days. The sports department has also taken several measures to upgrade the basic infrastructure for sportspersons.”
