The team selection for the three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against South Africa is expected to take place on Friday (December 31) with the one significant agenda – whether to take chances with Rohit Sharma. Having already announced Rohit as the skipper for the ODIs, the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee is in a quandary over his fitness status, which had earlier ruled him out of the three-Test series.

Cricbuzz understands that the selectors are in constant touch with the physios, both at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore as well as in South Africa and a decision whether to include him in the squad is expected to be taken after consulting with Rohit himself, who was ruled out of the Tests because of a left hamstring injury. In his absence, KL Rahul, who was earlier appointed vice-captain of the Test side, could be named captain for the ODIs as well.

Among other important points of selection meeting will be the unavailability of two key spinners – Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Both have been ruled out because of injuries and in their absence of veteran R Ashwin stands a good chance to be back in the ODI scheme of things. However, the seasoned spinner will face a stiff competition from fellow spinner from his state Tamil Nadu, Washington Sundar.

Sundar has not been available since March but it is understood that he has now fully recovered and stands a good chance to be in the mix. The 22-year-old bowled impressively in the just-concluded Vijay Hazare one-day competition, in which Tamil Nadu finished runners-up. The selectors were in Jaipur to watch him first hand. He was the third highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

Yuzvendra Chahal, a regular in white-ball formats for India not too long ago, may be back in the squad, too. As previously reported, Venkatesh Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad look certain to be picked.

The three matches will be played on January 19 and 21 in Paarl and on January 23 in Cape Town.
