A new generation of smart traffic lights that help to keep traffic moving could be introduced as part of the latest measures to combat congestion.
Plans are being drawn up to use technology that feeds information to motorists about the appropriate speed to use on the approach to lights, ensuring that vehicles are not stuck on red.
The system, called green light optimal speed advice (Glosa), is intended to improve journey times and prevent engines stopping and starting at lights, which can dramatically worsen levels of exhaust emissions.
A report backed by the Department for Transport said that the technology would “provide a new rapidly available tool for reducing stops and congestion”.
