Winter sports coaches, players and administrators react to latest MHSAA timeline

Written by corres2

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced Wednesday that boys and girls bowling, girls gymnastics and boys swimming and diving may resume practicing on Saturday, Jan. 16, due to the updated epidemic order by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).

Regular-season competitions will begin for swimming and diving on Jan. 22 and gymnastics and bowling will kick off their seasons on Jan. 25.

The news was not as cheerful for the rest of the winter sports community, as contact sports such as boys and girls basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling will also begin “non-contact” practices on Jan. 16 but won’t be allowed to begin scheduled competitions until Feb. 1.

The latest epidemic order by the MDHHS mandates that masks will be required of all participants except when they are actively participating in gymnastics and swimming and diving. A limit of 100 spectators will be allowed inside school gyms and 250 spectators at stadiums or arenas.

Winter sports coaches, players, parents and administrators reacted on social media to the latest detour in the return to the winter sports season.
