An eight-month-old Indian-origin baby, her parents, and uncle who were kidnapped from Merced County in California have been found dead, the local sheriff confirmed on Thursday. The family was of Indian origin and went missing on Monday. In connection with the case of kidnapping, a 48-year-old man was taken into custody.

Vern Warnke, the sheriff for Merced County, was reported by CNN as saying, “It’s brutally, tragically senseless.” The subject of the holdup was reportedly seen on a surveillance video. The man was seen in the footage pushing the family into the truck.

The family consisted of 8-month-old Aroohi Dheri, her 27-year-old mother Jasleen Kaur, her 36-year-old father Jasdeep Singh, and her 39-year-old uncle Amandeep Singh. The family was abducted on Monday at a place of business in Merced County, California. They were originally from Harsi Pind in Hoshiarpur, Punjab.

A news release states that on Tuesday morning, detectives learned that one of the victim’s bank cards had been used at an ATM in Atwater, Merced County.

According to a statement from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office, investigators discovered a surveillance image of a person conducting a bank transaction who resembles the individual in the image from the original kidnapping incident.
