Although the Big Ten approved a nine-game football schedule starting Oct. 23-24, it appears the rest of Division I fall sports will be moved to spring schedules because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The NCAA Division I Council on Wednesday approved schedules and championships for fall sports starting in January and ending in May. At Minnesota, that would affect men’s and women’s cross country, soccer and volleyball, which last season advanced to the Final Four.
Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren said Wednesday the conference wanted to get football’s testing and safety protocols hammered out before moving on to sports with smaller rosters but indicated the NCAA’s recommendation — which still needs to be approved by its Board of Governors — would be followed.
“As you know, some of the fall sports championships have already been moved to the spring,” Warren said during a news conference Wednesday. “But we’ll talk about that internally and as always follow the advice and guidance of our athletic directors and we’ll make the determination at that appropriate time. Then we’ll be able to circle back and make that announcement, too.”
As of Thursday morning, Minnesota athletics was waiting for guidance. No fall or winter schedules are available on the team’s web site, despite the fact that the Division I Council also recommended that basketball begin Nov. 25, two weeks later then initially scheduled.
That, too, must be approved by the Board of Governors.
On Sept. 10, college hockey’s 11 Division I conferences, including the Big Ten, WHCA and NCHC, announced the 2020-21 men’s and women’s hockey seasons were being postponed indefinitely.
Because the Big Ten already has approved playing conference-only schedules, playing in the fall is an option but would compromise teams’ ability to compete for national championships. The NCAA also recommended filling national brackets to 75 percent capacity.
The recommended schedules for fall sports played at Minnesota are as follows:
- Volleyball: Jan. 22-April 3 regular season; 48-team national tournament (32 automatic qualifiers, 16 at-large); championship match April 25.
- Cross country: Jan. 30-March 5 regular season; 255 men’s runners and 255 women’s runners will compete at nationals March 15.
- Women’s soccer: Feb. 3-April 17 regular season; 48-team national tournament (31 automatic qualifiers, 17 at-large); championship match May 17.
The cross country and soccer teams, of course, would encounter weather-related difficulties not applicable for many other schools.
