From October 5 to 30, the City of Mississauga is hosting its first online Smart City Open Challenge. The online event targets Mississauga high school and post-secondary students to develop innovative ideas and solutions that use data and technology to assist the City. This year’s challenge is to contribute to the City’s ongoing COVID-19 response and digital transformation.
As part of the Smart City Master Plan, the Smart City Open Data Challenge focuses on public engagement through the Centre for Civic Curiosity. Participants will have the opportunity to learn, expand their professional networks, be mentored by industry professionals and demonstrate their skills and knowledge while being recognized for their talents.
Participants can register as individuals or as a team. Registration is open until noon on Friday, October 2.

Free – registration is required.
During the kick-off event, participants will hear from Mayor Bonnie Crombie as well as data and technology experts from ICUBE UTM, EDGE Sheridan College, Tableau, ESRI, AWS and Data Docket.
During the event, participants will identify a challenge based on issues and opportunities realized during the pandemic. Working virtually within a team for three weeks, participants will develop solutions to that challenge using open data and technology while getting support and guidance from subject matter experts, including staff from Mississauga’s Economic Development Office and Information Technology division. At the end of the event, teams will submit their solutions to a panel of judges and prizes will be awarded to the winning teams.
