The team at MidCoast Assist, a support service of MidCoast Council, is currently rolling out the second phase of its “Technology in Homes” project, providing funding and support for local seniors to become more connected using technology.

Last year the program saw 60 people aged over 65 years take part in the program They reported increased confidence in using their devices and improved connections to family and friends.

In this next phase another 50 seniors will be provided free or low cost technology, through grant funding provided by the Federal Government’s Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP).

“As soon as we introduced this program last year we had 60 willing participants and even more on the waiting list,” coordinator of MidCoast Assist, Phillip Miller said.

“We have received further funding and will be working with up to 200 participants over the next two years”.

The program is an opportunity for MidCoast Assist to provide access to smart phones, iPads, tablets and computers to seniors.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenging time across the board, but particularly for the more vulnerable members of our community”, Phil said. “Technology in the home will help our seniors keep in touch with family, friends, support services and their local community, and provide opportunities for online transactions like banking and shopping.”

Expressions of interest to take part in this phase of the project are currently open and can be made by phoning MidCoast Assist on 1300 65 88 30 before 4pm on Friday, October 30. Criteria applies, and priority will be given to seniors living alone or in isolated areas, those who have limited or no current access to technology at home, and people who need training and support.

The Technology in Homes project will be complemented in coming months with a Help Desk, device borrowing library and an on-line portal, all designed to support seniors using technology to connect with others.

MidCoast Assist is an ageing and disability support service of MidCoast Council.
