Thomas R. Proctor’s fall season has not been canceled, but it is on hold.
Athletic Manager Vin Perrotta told the Observer-Dispatch Friday afternoon the Utica City School District decided to “pause” all athletic activities for fall prior to the scheduled start date on Monday.
“The district feels it’s best to pause athletics because we are all remote, transportation is a concern and it doesn’t add up to have athletics when all of the students are not in class,” Perrotta said. “They are going to continue to evaluate the situation.”
The decision could affect the boys and girls soccer teams and cross-country teams, as well as girls tennis, gymnastics, girls swim and field hockey. Perrotta said playing in the fall has not been ruled out, but he is glad the state is allowing fall teams to play in the “Fall Sports Season II” — which is set to begin on Monday, March 1.
“There have been no practices,” Perrotta said. “Sports were paused before the start date. The good news is there are some options this year.”
Proctor’s football team — which reached regionals last season — already had its season postponed until March 1 due to New York State guidelines. The 2020 state championships for fall sports have already been canceled.
The Utica City School District was one of the first to cancel the spring season. Proctor’s spring sports season was canceled March 16 instead of postponed — like many other local schools decided to announce — after Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency on March 7.
“I think the district’s thinking safety first,” Perrotta said. “It depends on the different situations but we are hopeful. Hopefully it gets better.”
