More big decisions could be made Thursday when the Minnesota State High School League board of directors meets to discuss football and volleyball playoffs and the upcoming 2020-21 winter sports season.
But according to MSHSL media specialist John Millea, don’t get your hopes up for football and volleyball state tournaments to be approved.
“The possibility of any state tournaments this fall are just very thin. I doubt if we’ll see any state tournaments,” Millea said last week on his “Preps Today” podcast with Jim Souhan.
“I’m guessing right now, football and volleyball, they’ll have some semblance of section tournaments,” he said. “But with restrictions on crowds and gathering teams together at a tournament just isn’t very workable. You never say never, things can change in a hurry.”
The board originally voted to postpone the football and volleyball seasons until the mid-winter/spring due to COVID-19, but that decision was reversed at a special board meeting last week. Both sports started practices this week, with the first volleyball competitions beginning Oct. 8, followed by the first night of football games Oct. 9.
A major focus of the board meeting Thursday will be winter activities: adapted floor hockey, alpine skiing, basketball, cheerleading, dance team, debate, gymnastics, hockey, nordic skiing, one act play, swimming and diving, wrestling.
“My guess is winter sports will start later than normal. The seasons will be shorter than normal. There will be fewer games than normal,” said Millea.
For example, with the volleyball season starting its 11-week season this past Monday, it’ll run past the originally scheduled Nov. 9 start date for the first week of girls basketball practice. That creates a conflict for girls who want to play volleyball and basketball, so pushing the basketball season back and shortening the season would help avoid such conflicts.
The same goes for other sports and activities that would crossover if original start dates aren’t moved. The conflict is less pressing for students who want to play football and basketball. The football season cannot extend beyond Nov. 28, which is less than two weeks after boys basketball practices are allowed to begin Nov. 16.
