The world’s top club competition kicks back into life after a short recess as 32 teams compete for one of the most coveted prizes in football.
Reigning champions Bayern Munich, in imperious form having scooped both the European Super Cup and German Super Cup in recent weeks, will be among the favourites as they seek to become only the second team ever to defend the Champions League trophy.
But after a comparatively poor campaign last season, the British quartet of Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea will be hoping they can improve and book their place in the showpiece finale at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul next summer.
All four teams learned their fate at the group stage draw this week with both Liverpool (Ajax, Atalanta, Midtjylland) and Man Utd (PSG, RB Leipzig, Istanbul Basaksehir) facing tough opposition.
Man City (Porto, Olympiakos, Marseille) and Chelsea (Sevilla, FK Krasnodar, Rennes) meanwhile will fancy their chances of advancing to the latter stages.

Competition will be fierce once again as 48 teams enter the 2020/21 Europa League group stage hoping to make it to the final in the Polish city of Gdansk next summer.
Arsenal and Leicester were joined in the draw this week by Tottenham, Celtic and Rangers after the trio qualified for the group stage through the play-offs.
Rangers outfought Turkish giants Galatasaray, while Celtic defeated Bosnian outfit FK Sarajevo and Spurs thrashed Maccabi Haifa to add their names to the pot.

It feels like it’s been a long time coming – but the Champions Cup final is finally upon us!
Rob Baxter’s red-hot Exeter Chiefs will be hoping to complete a fairy-tale story and secure a first ever European trophy to keep the coveted Heineken Champions Cup under English control.
Championship-dwellers just 10 years ago, victory at Ashton Gate – the ground from which they won promotion to the Gallagher Premiership exactly a decade ago, no less – would complete one of the most remarkable transformations in the history of British rugby.
With defending champions Saracens relegated to the second tier of club rugby, victory could also signal the birth of a new European dynasty.
But fellow finalists Racing 92 will be seeking to write their own history having been thwarted at this stage in the competition twice in the last five years.
Inspired by Scottish superstar Finn Russell, the Parisians are sure to prove a stern test for the English hopefuls in what is shaping up to be one of the most fascinating finals in recent memory.
Pat Lam’s Bristol Bears will be hoping they can become the first English Challenge Cup winners since Gloucester in 2015 as they seek to cap a remarkable European run with victory over Toulon in Marseille.
The Bears only returned to the top flight of English rugby two years ago but under Lam’s guidance, the Somerset outfit have looked perfectly at home competing among the elite both domestically and abroad.
Now counting the likes of Charles Piutau and Semi Radrada, as well as promising young English standouts Ben Earl and Max Malins, among their talented starting 15, the Bears are not short of star power.
Standing in their way, Toulon will be hoping they can channel the spirit of their former selves as three-time winners of the Champions Cup during the club’s glory days.
Once able to call upon the services of Jonny Wilkinson, Bryan Habana and Mitt Giteau, the team sheet has a more modest roll call in the modern age – but with the tantalising prospect of securing a first ever Challenge Cup on the horizon, the French team won’t be lacking desire.
It could be a month to remember for Exeter Chiefs fans who are assured of their place in the Premiership play-offs as well as their place in the European Cup final in October.
Rob Baxter’s men will be hot favourites to win their first league title since 2017 but will need to navigate any potential banana-skins lurking in the play-offs first.
Four sides remain in contention for the final three places in the play-offs with Bristol, Sale, Bath and Wasps taking it to the wire ahead of the climactic Round 22 this weekend.
Once again, we will be showing every game from the Premiership’s final round of fixtures live with all six games kicking off at 3pm on Sunday 4 October.
The broadcast details for the play-offs will be confirmed in due course with the competition finale confirmed for Saturday 24 October.
Pay-per-view MMA returns to BT Sport Box Office with a monster fight card exclusively live from Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.
The headline tilt sees the return of pound-for-pound contender and reigning undisputed lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov, taking on interim champion Justin Gaethje in an unmissable world title showdown.
Fighting for the first time since losing his father and coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, to the pandemic, Khabib is sure to endure one of the toughest nights of his career against a man whom many believe could be his kryptonite.
Despite beating Tony Ferguson handily in one of the most entertaining fights of the year to book his shot at the title, Gaethje will enter the Octagon as the underdog at UFC 245 but the king of violence will pay no mind to the odds on his quest to secure the undisputed belt.
Elsewhere on the card, Robert Whittaker will face Jared Cannonier in a middleweight co-main event that could have huge ramifications on the 185lb landscape.
Whittaker will be desperate to secure a rematch with the successor to his middleweight throne, Israel Adesanya, while Alaskan native Cannonier has already been promised a shot at the belt next – if he can triumph over ‘The Reaper’ on Fight Island.
Heavyweights Alexander Volkov and Walt Harris will go to war, with Islam Makhachev facing Rafael dos Anjos, Cynthia Calvillo taking on Lauren Murphy and Magmoed Ankaev versus Ion Cutelba rounding off the bumper six-fight main card.
Full details on how to book this must-see pay-per-view will be released shortly.
MotoGP – throughout October
One of the most entertaining and wide-open MotoGP seasons continues with three races throughout October for fans to sink their teeth into.
Fabio Quartararo’s dramatic victory at the Catalonia GP last time out means he narrowly leads the championship standings by eight points from Spanish rival Joan Mir.
Experienced Yamaha star Maverick Vinales lies in third while one of the pre-season favourites Andrea Dovizioso sits in fourth, 24 points off the lead.
So it’s all to play for with half of the six races remaining taking place over the next 31 days, beginning in France on Sunday 11 October at the Bugatti Circuit.
A week later, the tour heads to Spain for a two-week tenure at the Ciudad del Motor de Aragon in one of the quirks of this modified 2020 season.
All the action from every race weekend will be exclusively live across the BT Sport network.
On race day, subscribers watching via the BT Sport app or BT Sport website will be able to follow along using the revolutionary enhanced video player, offering breath-taking multi-camera viewing experiences and an interactive timeline to give you the very best viewing experience around.
Boxing – October 10
Frank Warren’s Queensberry Boxing continues with a thoroughly entertaining Fight Night to look forward to on October 10.
World title hopeful Liam Williams headlines the card, making his first return to action post-lockdown in a potentially tricky British middleweight title defence against mandatory challenger Andrew Robinson.
Welshman Williams has aspirations beyond these shores over the next 12 months but knows he must not take his eye of the ball if he is to keep hold of his position as mandatory challenger to the WBO champion Demetrius Andrade.
However, the 28-year-old sent his opponent Robinson a chilling warning ahead of their date with destiny later this month, adding: “I am obviously very, very confident and I know I will make a good job of him because I am training hard and I will turn up like I do for every other fight having left no stone unturned,” said the Welshman.
“I don’t think he is on my level but I am definitely not taking him lightly and I will approach the fight the way I do the others and that is with bad intentions.
“He is my mandatory and I think it is a dangerous fight because I think he could possibly get hurt. The referee and his team need to be careful and need to be looking after his health and interests because I genuinely think I could damage him.
In the co-main event, fellow British champion Anthony Cacace puts his Lonsdale belt on the line against Commonwealth king JJ Metcalf while heavyweight prospect Nathan Gorman faces Ghanaian slugger Richard Lartey.
