Some Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Holland Patent student-athletes will return to the practice field soon.
On Friday, both schools announced that its fall sports teams can practice Monday.
Schools across the state were given the green light to begin practicing Sept. 21. Games across Section III started this weekend.
VVS Athletic Director Randy Thomas confirmed the news via an email to the Observer-Dispatch on Friday morning. Only varsity sports, though, will be able to practice. There’s no word on junior varsity and modified sports, yet.
Holland Patent sports were on pause since some students tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Sports will resume alongside in-person instruction Monday, Superintendent Jason Evangelist said in Friday’s letter to the Holland Patent learning community.
The New York State Department of Health was referenced in the letter, citing the length of time since the school district’s initial positive case was far enough in the past for children to return to school to learn and participate in after-school activities.
“The DOH has advised that due to the length of time since the initial positive case, it is safe for students to return to in-person instruction, provided we continue to follow our precautionary measures, including social distancing, handwashing and wearing a face covering,” Evangelist wrote in the letter.
