Add another former Lion to the list of angry fans, analysts, and former players who have responded to Detroit head coach Matt Patricia’s postgame comments following a frustrating loss to the Saints.
As a reminder — which you probably don’t need, at this point — Patricia’s answer to a reporter asking about his 10-25-1 record as a head coach was as follows:
“I mean, that’s a hard question,” he said. “Obviously, we just lost to the Saints. Let’s just give them credit for this game. They played extremely well and I know we’ve got a lot of work to do. Certainly I think when I came to Detroit there was a lot of work to do, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
Former quarterback Dan Orlovsky ripped into Patricia for his words, calling the claim at the end of his answer “a bunch of trash.”
But while Orlovsky played under Jim Caldwell before Patricia came to town, he never had a chance to play under Patricia. Former Pro Bowl safety Glover Quin, on the other hand, did play under the Lions’ current head coach, and he expressed a similar sentiment to Orlovsky.
“Don’t start this mess!!” Quin posted to his Instagram story, over top of an article regarding Patricia’s postgame responses. “You took over a 9 win team!! What you mean a lot of work to do!!”
He added that Patricia’s claim was “laughable” when combined with Orlovsky’s tweet on the matter.
He then added one more post, emphasizing his skepticism of Patricia even further.
It’s not the first time that Quin has had something to say about Patricia since he retired after the 2018 season. After Darius Slay was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles and stories about his unhappiness with the Lions’ team culture surfaced, Quin supported his former teammate in an appearance on Payne & Pendergast on Sports Radio 610 in Houston, a RADIO.COM Sports affiliate.
“We were changing the perception for the Detroit Lions and then all of sudden Matt Patricia comes in and feels like, ‘I gotta change the whole culture,'” Quin said (via Sean Wagner-McGough). “And we’re like, ‘You don’t have to change the culture. The culture is good. They just maybe want you to get us over the hump.’ … Coach Patricia came in and he tore it all down, and a lot of the guys didn’t really want to buy into what he was teaching because of the way he presented it. His attitude, his persona, his arrogance, things like that made people not really want to buy into it. And that was the disconnect.”
