Cyclone “Gulab” will make landfall around midnight along the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The coastal districts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have been put on red alert.

According to a forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall between Gopalpur in Odisha and Kalingapatanam in Andhra Pradesh with wind speeds of up to 95 kmph.

As of 8:30 am today, Cyclone ‘Gulab’, named by Pakistan, was about 180 km east-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha and 240 km east of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, according to an IMD update.

Cyclone Gulab likely to cross Andhra, Odisha coasts by midnight

The Indian Meteorological Department informed that “Cyclone Gulab” is likely to move westwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha as a cyclonic storm by today midnight.

“Gulab is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coasts between Kalingapatnam and Gopalpur as a cyclonic storm by midnight today. The landfall process will commence from the evening of today,” tweeted the IMD.

Earlier in the day, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik chaired a virtual meeting in Delhi to review the preparedness of ”Cyclone Gulab”.

Addressing the media, Mr Patnaik said, “Today I held a virtual meeting with the chief secretary and district collectors of Odisha to discuss the precautionary measure to be taken against ”Cyclone Gulab” in the state. There is a total of ten districts which will be affected by the cyclone by today evening.”

Odisha sets “zero casualty” target as cyclone ‘Gulab” approaches, evacuation drive underway

Hours before cyclone “Gulab” makes landfall in Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday set a “zero casualty” target in the vulnerable districts of the state, where rainfall activity started in the southern and coastal regions under the influence of the weather system.

The cyclone, the second to hit the state in four months after “Yaas” wreaked havoc in May, is likely to make landfall between Gopalpur and Kalingapatanam in Andhra Pradesh around midnight, the India Meteorological Department said.

It lay centered about 125 km southeast of Gopalpur and 160 km east of Kalingapatnam, the Met office said, adding, the system is moving at a speed of 18 kmph in the sea.

“It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts… with maximum sustained wind speed of 75-85 kmph gusting to 95 kmph, around midnight of today. The landfall process will commence from late evening of Sunday,” the IMD said, while issuing a “Red Message” (extreme rain).

As many as 42 teams of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and 24 squads of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with about 102 teams of fire brigade personnel, have been dispatched to the seven districts – Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Kandhamal, Special Relief Commissioner PK Jena said.

Rainfall has begun in Odisha’s southern and coastal regions today morning with Cyclone Gulab likely to make landfall around midnight, the India Meteorological Department said, reported news agency PTI.

“It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts… with maximum sustained wind speed of 75-85 kmph gusting to 95 kmph, around midnight of today. The landfall process will commence from late evening of Sunday,” the weather office said, issuing a ‘Red Message’ (extreme rain). The current speed of the system is 18 kmph.
