The highly anticipated Katy Boardwalk District is one step closer to bringing new entertainment, dining and retail to Katy. The Katy Boardwalk District’s development team announced Sept. 23 that it has added two new partners whose focus will be on attracting chef-driven restaurants and unique, first-to-market entertainment concepts while enhancing the lakefront destination’s overall site plan.
The Colliers Retail Team has been tapped to manage the project’s tenant leasing activities, said Bernard Kaplan, public relations representative for the Katy Boardwalk District. The firm’s retail services team of Wade Greene, Kimberly Lenardson and Hannah Tosch currently is in discussions with several notable restaurant, bar and entertainment concepts.
“The Katy Boardwalk District will be a true ‘third place’ for local residents, a place outside of the home and office where they seek relaxation, entertainment and new experiences,” a statement from Greene said. “The district’s retail mix, amenities, and dining and entertainment options will draw the well-educated and well-traveled from Katy, the greater Houston area and beyond.”
“We’ve heard from a number of concepts both here in Houston and across the country,” said Greene, who also manages Colliers hospitality advisory teams. “We’re certainly evaluating all of these opportunities to determine the best ones for the project.”
The Katy Boardwalk District plans to begin announcing its first tenants in early 2022.
Katy Boardwalk District will be home to the area’s first full-service hotel and conference center, a 304-room, four-star property with ballroom and event space to accommodate large meetings and social gatherings. Its residential component, Boardwalk Lofts, is expected to open this fall as Katy’s newest luxury apartment community.
“The tenant lineup reflects the diversity of the city, and regular community-driven events on the sprawling green space, art-infused streetscapes and the buzz of constant conference attendees and visitors,” Greene added.
Kaplan noted that Method Architecture also has joined the development team to re-imagine the mixed-use and retail site plan in order to better maximize the appeal of its 90-acre nature-inspired lake showcasing the region’s native trees, flora and wildlife.
“The impact of COVID-19 gave us extra time to re-evaluate the site plan to ensure we’re incorporating the lakefront experience into the entire project,” explained Keith Dalton of KBH Venture, co-developer of the Katy Boardwalk District.
Dalton said that greater emphasis will be placed on improved sight lines and accessibility to the lake for hotel guests and those visiting the destination to dine or simply enjoy an outdoor activity on the public green space. A refined site plan is expected to be released this fall.
“As a public/private partnership, we’re delighted to work with a team of professionals with the experience and vision needed to bring the boardwalk to life,” said Skip Conner, president of the Katy Development Authority.
Katy City Administrator, Byron Hebert added, “they represent the best and brightest in design, development and leasing. We’re looking forward to collaborating with the entire team.”
The 169-acre setting at Kingsland Boulevard and Prairie Parkway, just south of I-10, is a public and private partnership among the city of Katy, the Katy Development Authority, and developers KBH Venture and Sueba USA.
