NEW DELHI: The success of para athletes at the Tokyo Paralympics 2021 will inspire India’s younger generation with physical disabilities to take up sports as a viable career option, without having to face any more stigmatization and lack of public empathy, stated the country’s proud Paralympian medal winners who scripted history after returning home from the Games with their highest-ever tally of 19 medals.
Often neglected because of their disabilities, the country’s para athletes changed the public’s perception towards them after scripting the big success story of Indian sports in Tokyo with their heart-warming performances. These Tokyo-returned Paralympians- 14 out of 19 medal winners – were felicitated by the Piramal Group, in association with the Delhi Golf Club (DGC), here on Sunday evening, in the presence of Piramal Group chairman Ajay G Piramal, filmmaker Boney Kapoor and actor Janhvi Kapoor, among others.
Among the medal winners present were Avani Lekhara, Singhraj Adhana and Manish Narwal (shooting), Sumit Antil, Sundar Singh Gurjar and Devendra Jhajharia (javelin), Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar (badminton), Praveen Kumar, Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu (high jump), Yogesh Kathunia (discus throw), Nishad Kumar (athletics) and Harvinder (archery).
On the occasion, the Paralympians were presented with cash rewards and mementos, at the DGC, to celebrate the triumph of their spirit over seemingly insurmountable odds. India’s medal count at the Tokyo Paralympics included five gold, eight silver and six bronze. Shooting contributed five medals to the total tally, followed by high jump and badminton with four each.
“The success of para athletes at the Tokyo Paralympics have certainly brought about a sea change in the mindset of people. They have started recognizing our efforts and the glory which we brought to the nation. More needs to be done to educate people about para athletes and their struggle but the Tokyo Games have certainly brought us long-awaited recognition and fame,” said Jhajharia, India’s greatest Paralympian with two gold and a silver from the Games.
