GALESBURG BOYS GOLF
Runbom ties for 7th at state meet
NORMAL — Galesburg High School junior Jason Runbom finished in a tie with three others for seventh place in the Class 2A boys state golf meet over the weekend.
Benton junior Cy Norman finished atop the field with a 134 while Runbom finished with a 144 after two rounds of play at Weibring Golf Course.
Bushnell-Prairie City’s Dalton Strode missed the cut after the first round of play in Class 1A state action.

Sandburg’s Phillips qualifies for national tourney
BYRON — Carl Sandburg College men’s golf freshman Clayton Phillips finished 10th overall at the Region IV tournament Saturday at PrairieView and qualified for the NJCAA Division II Championship.
Phillips put together a 54-hole total of 229, shooting 76 in Thursday’s opening round, 75 on Friday and 78 on Saturday. His finish helped him earn the last of five individual qualifier spots to next spring’s national tournament as well as all-region honors.
The top three teams and top five individuals not from those teams advanced to nationals, which will take place May 17-20 at Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin, Missouri. The Chargers have now qualified as a team or advanced an individual to the national tournament 10 years in a row and 14 times in the last 15 seasons.
Sandburg took seventh as a team, shooting rounds of 314, 318 and 324 to finish at 956 for the tournament. Cole Hopping finished at 238 for the weekend, including a second-round 76.
Bryant & Stratton shot 917 to win the region title by five strokes. Highland’s Riku Moriyama shot 216 to win the individual title by five shots, highlighted by a 4-under 68 in the final round.

Knox grabs first win in 2021
GALESBURG — The Knox College football team blanked Beloint 42-0 on Saturday in a Midwest Conference affair at the Knosher Bowl.
It was the first victory of the season for the Prairie Fire, it was also Knox head coach Aaron Willits’ first win.
The Prairie Fire’s defense proved to be a formidable match for the Buccaneers, holding them to only 35 yards in the first quarter. After punting on its first drive, Knox’s offense put together multiple lengthy touchdown drives.
A Kaile Williams 18-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Eifering kicked off the scoring, and another Williams touchdown via a 2-yard run made it 14-0 early, putting the Prairie Fire in an early groove.
Knox’s rushing attack was its bread and butter, gaining 346 yards and punishing Beloit’s defense. Later in the second quarter, Isaac Mora picked off the ball and set up the Prairie Fire for another touchdown, this time on a 1-yard Hunter Anderson rush. Knox’s next drive also produced a touchdown with Williams breaking off a spectacular 50 yard run that sent the sideline into a frenzy. The Prairie Fire cruised to halftime up 28-0 due to their impressive performance.
In the second half, Knox produced another efficient touchdown drive with Williams’ third touchdown run of the day cementing a career game for the quarterback. The Prairie Fire’s defense stood strong again, forcing Beloit to punt for the fifth time at that point, and this effort led to Knox’s sixth score of the day thanks to another Anderson touchdown run.
The Buccaneers proceeded to march down the field on their ensuing possession, only for the Prairie Fire to come down with their second interception of the day deep in their own territory. This sealed the game, as little movement occurred for either team for the remainder of the game.
Scots hold off Maroons 40-37
MONMOUTH — The Monmouth College football team built a big lead on Saturday and then had to hang on for a 40-37 home win over the University of Chicago. The game was a battle of undefeated conference teams with the Maroons getting votes in this week’s poll. At the end of the day it is the Fighting Scots (4-1, 4-0) who remain unbeaten in Midwest Conference action at the halfway point.
Chicago took an early lead as their first drive covered 76 yards on six plays and ended in a 35-yard touchdown run. Monmouth answered immediately with a 10-play, 58-yard drive. Devin Lawrence plunged into the end zone from 1-yard out and the game was tied 7-7.
The Scots forced punts on the next four Chicago drives, including one that started at the 3-yard line after a muffed kickoff return. The Scots took advantage as they scored on each succeeding possession. A 6-play, 51-yard drive ended in a 4-yard score from Lawrence for a 14-7 lead.
Then running back Henderson Francois took over. He scored from 1-yard out for a 21-7 Scots lead on a drive that began on the Chicago 34. Monmouth took over on the Chicago 27 after another punt and following a penalty on the Maroons, Francois scored from 17-yards out. The extra-point was blocked and Monmouth led 27-7.
Following a muffed punt recovered by the Maroons, Chicago kicked a field goal to cut the lead to 27-10. The Scots embarked on a 10-play, 75-yard drive to take their largest lead of the day. Quarterback Riley Fetterer capped the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run for a 33-10 lead as the extra-point was missed.
Chicago didn’t go away as they went to the air with the wind at their backs. They scored on the first play of successive drives with a 78-yard pass and run touchdown and a 32-yard touchdown reception to cut the Scots lead to 33-24. Chicago got another chance at the end of the half but Michael Lord intercepted Philip Martini’s pass at the goal line to end the half.
Monmouth’s first drive of the second half ended on downs at the Chicago 26 with Jake Uryasz coming up inches short on 4th and 8. The Maroons went down the field on three plays and scored to cut the Scots lead to 33-30 as the extra-point was missed.
After Monmouth punted, Kaleb Plattenberger intercepted Martini in the end zone to end the next Chicago drive. Devin Graham picked off Martini on the next Chicago drive with the Scots taking over at their own 15.
The first Monmouth drive of the fourth quarter stalled at the 37 and Addison Fletcher blasted a 63-yard punt for a touchback. Chicago’s drive ended on downs at the Monmouth 37 as Graham broke up a pass. The Scots took the ball down the field on a 7-play, 63-yard drive that took nearly four minutes off the clock. Francois ran the ball into the end zone from 30-yards out to put the Scots up 40-30 with 3:37 to play.
The Scots nearly iced the game with a safety but Martini escaped and picked up a first down. They moved across midfield with a 39-yard pass play and scored on the ninth play of the drive to pull within three.
Monmouth recovered the onside kick at their own 49 with just under a minute to play. The Scots were able to run out the clock, despite Chicago using two timeouts and Fetterer chucked the ball down the field while getting hit late as the clocks hit 0:00.
JR. HIGH GIRLS BASKETBALL
Galesburg’s 7th graders grab wins
CANTON — The Galesburg seventh grade girls basketball team won a pair of games in tourney action in Canton on Saturday.
Galesburg defeated Normal Parkside 41-7. Jozalyn Kilgore finished with 14 points, Grace Herchendroder chipped in nine points, and Evelin Guel and Ella Herchendroder added six points each for the Streaks.
Galesburg defeated Canton 35 – 21. Kilgore had 19 points in the win.
In eighth grade play, Parkside beat Galesburg 45-24. Kalia Cunningham had 10 points, Khloe May chipped in eight, and Sophia Kisler had six points for the Streaks.
The Little Giants grabbed a 38-12 win over the Streaks.
