SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Cameron Rising threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns in the second half, rallying Utah to a 35-21 victory over No. 18 Arizona State. Rising added 59 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Tavion Thomas ran for 84 yards and a touchdown. The Utes (4-2, 3-0 Pac-12) took over sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 South and are the only remaining unbeaten team in Pac-12 play. Jayden Daniels threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns to lead Arizona State. Daniels rushed for 46 yards and a TD. The Sun Devils (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12) surrendered 28 unanswered points in the second half. Utah scored on four straight drives in the second half to erase a 14-point halftime deficit.  

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Buffaloes used touchdowns from their defense and special teams to snap a four-game skid with a 34-0 win over winless Arizona. The loss extended the Wildcats’ school record losing streak to 18 games dating to a 35-30 win at Colorado in 2019. The Wildcats had played better of late but this one got away from them in the third quarter when they surrendered a blocked punt and an interception for touchdowns on back-to-back possessions. When the Buffaloes offense got the ball back they got a 62-yard touchdown pass to put the game away.

UNDATED (AP) — Former University of Southern California football player Paul Salata has died. He played briefly in the NFL and Canadian Football League and may be best remembered for creating the Mr. Irrelevant Award that honors the last selection of the NFL draft. Nephew Nick Salata says his uncle died Saturday of natural causes at home in Newport Beach, California, a day before his 95th birthday. Salata was a wide receiver at USC in the 1940s. He caught a touchdown in the Trojans’ shutout win over Tennessee in the 1945 Rose Bowl. Salata played for the 49ers, Colts and Steelers before playing in the CFL. Salata was 94.

UNDATED (AP) — In the Southeastern Conference, the coach on the hot seat can change week to week. Welcome, Dan Mullen. The Florida man had a lot of explaining to do after the 20th-ranked Gators lost to LSU and last week’s coach-in-big-trouble Ed Orgeron. While Gators fans are starting to run short on patience for Mullen, he seems safe. Certainly much safer than Oregeron and a couple of other coaches at programs with championship pedigree. Nebraska’s Scott Frost and Miami’s Manny Diaz against subjected their fans to excruciating losses. Meanwhile, No. 2 Iowa’s unbeaten season came to end against Purdue.
